Pitch
Jack of hearts is a flippant tail about a 7-year-old card trick magician who is sent to a magical world where he uses his slight of hand to become a celebrity while trying to keep secret the fact that he can’t do magic.
Genre:
Comedic Magic Realism
Themes:
Happenstance
Happenstance
Flippancy- the story doesn’t always take itself seriously
Realism through anti-climactic events- not everything ends with a bang sometimes they just putter out
Selective Realism
Fantastic Juxtaposition:
Young boy does card trick -> is charged for street performance without a permit
Protagonist is trying to do research to enable his plan -> gets bored and walks away
Young boy falls out of a chair and breaks a window -> Police claim he is using powerful magic beyond their control
The Story also explores the power of perspective
I was inspired by the art of impromptu storytelling. I remember as a kid my grandma would make up stories. Some days I was fighting dragons and others I was in a forest where the trees were so tall that they went straight through the moon. I don’t care that that's not possible if you can still entertain me.
I hope that this story is read aloud with friends I hope it creates engagement and immersion without extracting the reader from the world they are already in.
