Scene 2: Character Mission

Jack left the cafe feeling rather confident. He had won over his audience and completed the trick with style. He and his mother began walking downtown toward the game store. He shuffled the cards as he went. Jack was hoping to buy a new deck.

They came to a crosswalk and waited. His mom made a quick call to his father to see if he needed anything while they were out. As the light changed and they started to cross, Jack lost control of his cards and they scattered in the street. He tried to gather them as quickly as possible but the sign was counting down. 5... The winds began to pick up. 4... He saved the 2 of spades just before it fell into a puddle. 3... He had all but the Jack of hearts which had blown under a car. 2... He walked towards the car hoping to reach under quickly. 1... He began to reach but the driver laid on the horn. 0... He jumped back and bolted out of the street. Jack frowned, he didn't like tricking with an incomplete deck. Oh well, he would be getting a new one today anyway.

He looked around worriedly, where had his mother gone? He wasn't sure which way she went. He looked down each street looking for a trace of her but she was nowhere to be seen. Panicked, Jack ran down Elm street. He stopped. Was that her? He was sure he had heard his name. She must be calling from one street over. He could run around but, she could be gone by the time he got there. Jack decided to cut through. He found a shaded alley and made a run for it.

As Jack came out the other side the sun came out. He headed to where he thought he had heard her voice. It couldn't have been more than two blocks up. Maybe one more over. After running a few minutes he stopped. Something was wrong. Where was this? this didn't look like Oak street. It didn't look much like Harrisburg either.
